Day 2 Laggan to Invermoriston
16-21 Miles / 26-34 Km 7-10 Hrs 1870 or 3410ft / 570 or 1040 MetresThe trail now meets the second of the three lakes on the Great Glen Way, Loch Oich. Depending on where you are staying overnight, you have two route options for first part of your hike to Fort Augustus. If you are staying in Laggan, you can follow the route along the south side of Loch Oich, where the dilapidated remains of an old railway line serve as an excellent walking trail. Alternatively (or if you are staying in Invergarry), you can follow tracks and paths through the hills north of the loch with some great views of the lake. The trail then follows a pleasant path along the Caledonian Canal to Fort Augustus, the half-way point of the great Glen. Climbing out of Fort Augustus, you soon catch your first glimpse of Loch Ness. Have your camera ready! For the hike to Invermoriston, you can choose between a Low Route, with less climbing but fewer views, and a more exposed High Route with more climbs but also better views of Loch Ness.
-
Day 3 Invermoriston to Drumnadrochit
High Route 13.5 Miles / 22 Km 6-8 Hrs 2430ft / 740 Metres Low Route 14.5 miles / 23 Km 6-8 Hrs 1640ft / 500 MetresToday you have two options: a high route or a low route.
Stunning views over Loch Ness are your reward today for some steep climbs along forest tracks on the north-side of the lake. If you still have enough energy, we recommend a 4km detour to Urquhart Castle. Or perhaps a pint of the local brew sounds more appealing?
-
Day 4 Drumnadrochit to Inverness
19.5 or 20 Miles / 31 or 32 Km 7-9 Hrs 1570 or 1800ft / 480 or 550 MetresThe last day and, in terms of length, also the most challenging. Good thing your legs will be perfectly toned after the last few days of hiking! Good variety between forest paths and open moorland on this hike, with an optional High Route at Abriachan – a nice way to finish your Great Glen experience.
