  • Day 1 Arrival in Fort William

From your point of arrival, use the public transport information we provide to make the journey to Fort William.

  • Day 2 Fort William to Spean Bridge

    14.5 Miles / 23 Km 5-7 Hrs 750ft / 230 Metres

From Fort William, follow the shoreline as far as the Caledonian Canal – the coast-to-coast canal through Scotland. Look out for Neptune’s Steps – a series of canal locks – before continuing next to the canal as far as Gairlochy. At this point, you follow a quiet country road into the small town of Spean Bridge.

  • Day 3 Spean Bridge to Laggan/Invergarry

    17 or 18 Miles / 27 or 29 Km 7-9 Hrs 1570ft / 480 Metres

Return along the quiet country road from Spean Bridge to the Caledonian canal at Gairlochy. From there, quiet forest tracks lead you close to the shore of Loch Lochy as far as Laggan/Invergarry. A short detour en-route will afford you the chance to visit the Clan Cameron Museum where you can learn about the fascinating history of the clan.

  • Day 4 Laggan to Invermoriston

    16-21 Miles / 26-34 Km 7-10 Hrs 1870 - 3410ft / 570 or 1040 Metres

The trail now meets the second of the three lakes on the Great Glen Way, Loch Oich. Depending on where you are staying overnight, you have two route options for first part of your hike to Fort Augustus. If you are staying in Laggan, you can follow the route along the south side of Loch Oich, where the dilapidated remains of an old railway line serve as an excellent walking trail. Alternatively (or if you are staying in Invergarry), you can follow tracks and paths through the hills north of the loch with some great views of the lake. The trail then follows a pleasant path along the Caledonian Canal to Fort Augustus, the half-way point of the great Glen. Climbing out of Fort Augustus, you soon catch your first glimpse of Loch Ness. Have your camera ready! For the hike to Invermoriston, you can choose between a Low Route, with less climbing but fewer views, and a more exposed High Route with more climbs but also better views of Loch Ness.

  • Day 5 Invermoriston to Drumnadrochit

    High Route 13.5 miles / 22 Km 6-8 Hrs 2430ft / 740 Metres Low Route 14.5 miles / 23 Km 6-8 Hrs 1640ft / 500 Metres

Today you have two options: a high route or a low route.

Stunning views over Loch Ness are your reward today for some steep climbs along forest tracks on the north-side of the lake. If you still have enough energy, we recommend a 4km detour to Urquhart Castle. Or perhaps a pint of the local brew sounds more appealing?

  • Day 6 Drumnadrochit to Inverness

    19.5 Miles / 31 Km 7-9 Hrs 1570ft / 480 Metres

The last day and, in terms of length, also the most challenging. Good thing your legs will be perfectly toned after the last few days of hiking! Good variety between forest paths and open moorland on this hike, with an optional High Route at Abriachan – a nice way to finish your Great Glen experience.

  • Day 7 Departure from Inverness
