Day 2 Culatra Island (Ilha da Culatra)
3 Miles / 4.5 Km 1.5-2 Hrs 160ft / 50 MetresToday starts with a lovely boat ride (30-45 min) through the fascinating and ever-changing Ria Formosa Lagoon where you can view wading birds and mussel banks. On the relaxed, traffic-free island explore the little village of Farol below its lighthouse. From there, take off your shoes to follow the gorgeous beach for a few kilometres – and maybe jump into the waves for a little swim. Then turn inland and follow boardwalks to the charming small fishing village of Culatra where you can stop for refreshments before taking the boat back to Olhão through a lagoon that has now changed with the tide.

Day 3 Ludo Nature Trail
7.5-9.5 Miles / 12-15 Km 3-5 Hrs 300ft / 90 MetresThe Ludo Nature Trail is a great spot to introduce visitors to the stunning Ria Formosa Natural Park – a breathtaking lagoon that extends nearly 60 km along the Eastern Algarve coastline. This easy, short, and accessible trail offers a closer look at the rich biodiversity of the park, home to an abundance of birdlife, including flamingos, spoonbills, and many other species. The surrounding saltpans, a defining feature of the landscape, provide the perfect habitat for viewing these incredible creatures. We have also included an option to visit one of the beautiful nearby beaches. Transfers at the start and end of the hike.

Day 4 Altura - Vila Real de Santo António
7.5 Miles / 12 Km 4-5 Hrs 160ft / 50 MetresAfter a transfer to the former fishing village of Altura, a relaxing hike along the beach and sand dunes guides you to the lively resort town of Monto Gordo. Here, a pleasant boardwalk leads past fishing boats and cafes on one of the finest beaches of the eastern Algarve. The trail then enters the beautiful pine forest and nature reserve of Mata de Vila Real de Santo António. Look out for wild birds and elusive chameleons on your walk to the pretty city of Vila Real de Santo António, at the mouth of the Guadiana River which forms the border to Spain. Return to Tavira by train, past lagoons and orchards.

Day 5 Tavira Island (Ilha de Tavira) - Tavira
8 Miles / 13 Km 4-5 Hrs 300ft / 90 MetresA varied and rewarding coastal loop that blends beach, history, culture and wildlife. You start with a short ferry ride on the Gilão River from Tavira town to Ilha de Tavira, a barrier island known for its golden sands. From the ferry landing, follow the wide, peaceful beach westward, with the Atlantic stretching endlessly beside you. Pass the iconic Anchor Cemetery at Praia do Barril before you can take a narrow-gauge railway back across the lagoon to the mainland from where you walk along the lagoon of the Ria Formosa Natural Park. Stop at the charming fishing village of Santa Luzia, famous for its octopus catch, and then follow quiet tracks and paths through saltpans and wetlands. Keep an eye out for flamingos and other birdlife as you make your way back to Tavira.

Day 6 Praia da Marinha - Carvoeiro (Seven Hanging Valleys Trail)
5.5 Miles / 8.5 Km 3-4 Hrs 890ft / 270 MetresAfter a morning transfer, this unforgettable hike along the Algarve’s breathtaking coast takes you from the stunning Praia da Marinha, often celebrated as one of Europe’s most beautiful beaches, to the charming town of Carvoeiro. Following the renowned Seven Hanging Valleys Trail, you’ll be treated to dramatic limestone cliffs, shimmering turquoise waters, and panoramic views of the Atlantic Ocean. Along the way, discover hidden coves and pristine beaches, marvel at the natural beauty of sea arches and rock formations, and admire the famous Benagil Cave from above. Nearing Carvoeiro, you’ll reach Algar Seco, a fascinating natural site featuring intricate grottoes, caves, and churning pools shaped by centuries of waves. This scenic journey blends coastal wonders with geological marvels, culminating in the welcoming atmosphere of Carvoeiro.

Day 7 Carvoeiro - Ferragudo
6 Miles / 9.5 Km 3-4 Hrs 980ft / 300 MetresThis beautiful and more remote hike follows the Trail of the Headlands (Caminho dos Promontórios) along cliffs and beaches with stunning coastal views of cliffs. The spectacular route takes you along rugged limestone cliffs, offering breathtaking views of the Atlantic Ocean, secluded beaches, and dramatic sea caves. Along the way, you pass a 16th-century watchtower once used to guard against pirate raids, a lighthouse and a historic river fortification. For the last few kilometres, the route turns inland and follows the wide mouth of the Arade River to the fishing village of Ferragudo, with its charming whitewashed houses and vibrant riverside cafés. From there, you are transferred to your accommodation. Less crowded than the famous Seven Hanging Valleys Trail, this well-marked trail is ideal for nature lovers.

Day 8 Alvor - Portimão
5.5 Miles / 8.5 Km 3-4 Hrs 430ft / 130 MetresA lovely day along the coast offering stunning ocean views, golden cliffs and picturesque beaches, with plenty of opportunity to enjoy a coffee and a traditional ‘pastel de nata’. Starting at the Alvor Estuary, after a short transfer, you follow boardwalks alongside a lagoon and some beautiful beaches. Then, admire dramatic rock formations and secluded coves before you reach the small villages of Vau and Castelos. Eventually, you drop down onto the bustling beach at Praia da Rocha, which is bursting with activity. Enjoy the beach atmosphere from one of the many cafes and restaurants as you stroll along the boardwalk. Finally, climb up from the beach and into Portimão, finishing with incredible views from the Santa Catarina fort.

Day 9 Depart Portimão
There are frequent bus connections from Portimão to Faro. Alternatively, it is possible to get a taxi transfer from Portimão direct to Faro Airport. Please consult with your host or the reception staff at your accommodation for further information for onward travel.
