  • Day 1 Arrival in Porto Covo

From your point of arrival, use the public transport information we provide to make the journey to Porto Covo.

  • Day 2 Sao Torpes - Pessegueiro Island Beach

    8 Miles / 13 Km 3-5 Hrs 590ft / 180 Metres

Sao Torpes is the official start of the Fishermen’s Trail (Trilho dos Pescadores), and this is probably the most gentle section of the entire Rota Vicentina. You should therefore have some time to relax at the beaches. As you leave the industry of Sines, after a short morning transfer, you enter a natural park that protects this vast coastline with its stunning beaches, pristine dunes and initially low cliffs. These increase in magnitude and get more dramatic as you travel south over the following days. Walk past the village of Porto Covo and continue to Pessegueiro Island Beach, where you can explore a historic fort and wait for transfer to your accommodation. Allow time for a swim if you like.

  • Day 3 Pessegueiro Island Beach - Vila Nova de Milfontes

    10 Miles / 16 Km 4-6 Hrs 620ft / 190 Metres

Morning transfer to Pessegueiro Island Beach. A spectacular day along vast areas of sand dunes with inviting beaches, dramatic cliffs, remote, little coves, bright wildflowers and hardy seabirds. Allow time for a swim, if you like. But please keep in mind that this is a more strenuous stage, due to longer sections with soft sand.

  • Day 4 Vila Nova de Milfontes - Almograve (or Longueira)

    9.5 Miles / 15 Km 3-5 Hrs 660ft / 200 Metres

The first 2.5km of this already short section is mainly on roads before following a woodland path above the River Mira. This can easily be avoided by taking a ferry across the river. From the lovely beach at Furnas, the route follows a relaxing inland stretch through farmland and along shady shrubs. The trail returns to the coast at the beautiful Brejo Largo Beach before eventually turning inland towards the small village of Almograve.

  • Day 5 Almograve - Cavaleiro

    6 Miles / 10 Km 3-4 Hrs 890ft / 120 Metres

A short but varied section with beaches, a fishing harbour, red sand dunes, cliffs and the smell of pine forests. The day finishes at the tiny village of Cavaleiro, half way between Almograve and Zambujeira do Mar. As there is limited availability of suitable accommodation here, you may spend the night in those neighbouring villages, with a transfer from Cavaleiro.

  • Day 6 Cavaleiro - Zambujeira do Mar

    7.5 Miles / 12 Km 3-4 Hrs 490ft / 150 Metres

Possible morning transfer to Cavaleiro. Another short but varied section with cliffs, a lighthouse, a little fishing village, and of course the unique sight of storks nesting and resting on precipitous cliff edges and sea stacks – one of the highlights of the Rota Vicentina. The day concludes with the beautiful bay and beachfront at Zambujeira do Mar.

  • Day 7 Depart Zambujeira do Mar

There are frequent bus connections from Zambujeira do Mar to Lagos and towards Faro Airport or directly to Lisbon. Alternatively, it is possible to get taxi transfers from Zambujeira do Mar to the airports at Faro or Lisbon. Please ask your host or the reception staff at your hotel for further information for onward travel.
